it was Australia day on bondi beach a few days later. The beach was packed full with people, everywhere you looked there was Australian flags or something that people thought represented Australia,it was a pretty colourful place to be!
" there really is nowhere else that is as Australian as bondi beach on Australia day!" terry said to me down in middle south where we were patrolling. on shift today was tom, mouse, yak, terry, max ashford, dunno, jesse and myself we were all ready for the drama of Australia day.
" the annual thong swim is going on later so that will most likely cause some disruption and then we will have the usual dramas as well" terry said "brace yourself for today simba its gonna be a big one!"
Terry's predictions were correct almost straight away I noticed a woman fall off the sandbank and get swept out, I grabbed the board and ran in, I leapt on the board and quickly paddled over to her " jump on lie on your stomach" she scrambled aboard and I took her to shore " swim between the red and yellow flags next time!" I said before she thanked me and walked off. I walked back over to terry and put the board back in the holder
" hang on, you may need to head back in" terry said I turned around to see a group of men swimming in the rip, I grabbed the board and terry got the other board we both ran in. There was 4 of them and they all began to panic as the got washed further and further out. me and terry got to them quickly and they all scrambled for our boards
" right guys calm down!" I exclaimed " you need to lie on top of each other, 2 on each board no arguments!" 2 of the men pulled themselves onto my board and lay on top of each others backs. I paddled them into shore and dumped them under a wave " swim between the flags next time!". terry came onto shore with his 2 and tipped them off the board before giving them the same lecture as I did. they walked off down to the flags and me and terry put our boards back and sat back in the rhino.
the crowds were swelling by the minute and all of us were up to our eyes with rescues. tom was on the jetski picking up swimmers and had been out there for 4 hours darting from one end of the beach to another, he was picking up someone in front of us when I noticed something was very wrong.
" hey terry, I think the ski's broken down?" Tom was trying to move the ski but the engine had cut out completely. the ski was now a half tonne dead weight under no control, in front of hundreds of swimmers
" crap!" terry exclaimed. I grabbed the megaphone and ran down to the waters edge

I shouted into the megaphone, most people began to clear the water after seeing what was going on " tom your going to have to swim it in!" I shouted to him
tom moved down onto the mat and let the waves carry the ski in luckily it didn't hit anyone and tom and the ski were ok, yak came down with the trailer and they took the ski back up to the tunnel to fix it up.
" god bondi throws some curveballs at you!" I exclaimed to terry before running in to get another swimmer
by mine and terry's lunch breaks we had done nearly 50 rescues between us. we walked up to the tower where max and Jesse were on the tower shift. I walked over to a chair and slumped down already exhausted
" hard morning?" Jesse asked smiling at me
" you have no idea, god you Australians no how to celebrate, nearly everyone I pulled in had something Australian on them!" I shuddered as I saw a old man walk in front of the tower in speedos with the straya flag on them " some things can never be unseen Jesse" I said
at that point i heard yelling and cheering, I looked over to the walkway to look for where the noise was coming from. I saw a massive crowd of people, it looked like a fight
" its a fight!" i said pointing to the crowd, max picked up the phone and was about to ring the police when some cops came running down the walkway. there was always a high police number on big days and luckily they had seen the fight and came running into the crowd breaking up the mob. I watched as they took away some men who had started everything up, we breathed a sigh of relief when they left, one less drama to deal with.
after my lunch i was down near north with dunno where the inflatable thong event was taking place, yak was on the jetski monitoring everything to make sure everybody was ok. The event started and luckily went smoothly with now drama's.
north end was really quiet rescue wise, there were people having bbq's and lots of australian flags around, the atmosphere was amazing, this was my first ever australia day and so far it had been amazing.
The rest of the day passed quietly up north, south end was a different story however, especially with mouse on duty!, all afternoon we could hear the radio going crazy with the rescues. by pack up time north end was just dotted with a few people whilst south was still pretty crowded. it was 7:00 and me and dunno were taking down the north end flags when Jesse came on over the radio
" might need somebody to go in, theres a group of girls waving and they look a bit pi**ed, there also nude"
" did you say nude?" tom said
" yep, waving and nude"
I immediatly heard mouse over the radio " i need a location jesse!"
" 3rd ramp, there's a few of them so you may need a few guys down there"
I saw mouse and tom shoot down to 3rd ramp in the rhino and pull up to the waters edge, me and dunno drove down as we had taken down the flags. Mouse was poised and ready to run in at any moment when we got there, tom had run in but there was at least 5 in there and they all looked drunk. The camera's were pointing at mouse as he said to them " look I'm just here to make sure these girls are safe, i dont care if its nude girls, we have a ...." mouse stopped talking as Tom raised his hand for assistance and mouse ran in quickly with a big smile on his face
" men" I sighed, I looked over to dunno to see even he had his shirt off ready to run in!
I just stood back and let the boys rescue the women. they came back to shore stumbling over and slurring there words, they were really drunk! They had bikini bottoms on but made no attempt to cover there boobs up as they stumbled off, some people really don't care do they!
" I'd cop over time for that!" tom said as him and mouse walked out the water
i just sighed and me and dunno jumped back into the rhino and headed up to the tower. we put the rhino away before walking up the stairs where most of the boys where now, I went and stood next to Jesse
" god I'm tired" I said
" me to, how many rescues you done today?" Jesse said
" god knows, seems like millions!" I said
" home, takeaway, film then bed?"
" sounds brilliant, thanks Jesse" I said, wow way to spend your first Australia day!
sorry this is bad but needed to do straya day but didn't have a lot of ideas! also have been catching up on everybodys storys and youtube videos !
